St John’s School have created this guide to ensure clear and responsible communication across various platforms, including email, WhatsApp, School Comms, and Classlist.
Why is Guidance Needed?
Multiple communication tools help but can sometimes lead to misinformation and distress.
This guide encourages responsible posting to maintain a positive school community.
Who Sends Information and How?
School: Updates on trips, events, homework, meals, and general notices via email, SMS, School Comms, and the website.
PSA (Parent-Staff Association): Fundraising, volunteering, and event reminders via email, WhatsApp, and Classlist. For non-PSA matters, parents should contact staff directly.
Class Reps: Organise class socials and share PSA updates via email, WhatsApp, and Classlist.
Communication Guidelines
St John’s promotes a caring Christian community, discouraging gossip and online conflicts.
Parents should raise concerns with the school rather than online forums.
Classlist is the preferred platform for PSA communications, ensuring GDPR compliance and organised messaging.
WhatsApp is not supported by St John's but we appreciate it is widely used; PSA and Class Rep messages may be shared there, but it is encouraged for casual, non-school-related chats.
Posting & Social Media Etiquette
Inappropriate posts should be reported to a class rep, PSA Chair, or senior staff.
The PSA can moderate and disable accounts if necessary.
Photo & Video Sharing
Photos of pupils, staff, or parents should not be shared on social media without permission.
No photos of children should be posted alongside their names.
Filming events requires prior permission.
Parents should check privacy settings before uploading photos online.
Before Posting, Consider:
✔ Am I posting in anger?
✔ Could this be misinterpreted?
✔ Would someone be upset by this?
✔ Is there a better way to respond?
This guide promotes responsible and respectful communication to protect the well-being of the whole St John’s Community
